:: Continental Nucleus ::
An eroded volcano
thousands of miles high,
formed at the shores
of Lake Agassiz
and regurgitated molten lava
into her belly.
That is how the prairies came to be
emerging from the bottom
of a lake.
The miss matched rocks on the Shield
cover their ancestors for protection
with shifting grace.
A nucleus launched
in to the middle of a rain barrel
of geologic descent.
The further out, the younger it becomes
falling into and out of rifting orogeny.
The oldest bedrock
of eroded volcanic and sedimentary
lay east and west,
surrounded by granite and gneiss.
When the earliest of the quilting began
the rocks were merely volcanic islands
in the middle of another ocean.
It gives a warmth from a depth
that escapes through its cracks
and an energy that has been conspiring
with Mother Nature for eons,
with Superior quality.
